Jake Narro joined the golf professional staff at The Country Club of Louisiana in April of 2014. He was elected to membership in the PGA of America in 1996. Originally from Meridian, Mississippi, he moved to Louisiana in 1992 to begin his career at Beau Chene Golf and Racquet Club. Jake has worked at such facilities as Metairie Country Club, Bayou Oaks Golf Course and New Orleans Country Club and has extensive experience managing large tournaments and events. He has worked as a head professional at Lakewood Country Club, Live Oak Golf Course and Oak Knoll Country Club.
Jake’s playing accomplishments include five Gulf States Section championships, recognition twice as the Gulf States Section Player-of-the-Year, and three Louisiana Chapter honors for Player-of-the-Year. Representing the section, he has had several appearances in the National Club Professional Championship, PGA Tour events and Web.com events. Jake is the current secretary of the Louisiana Chapter of the Gulf States Section of the PGA of America.
Jake and his wife Amber have five children. His oldest daughter is at UL-Lafayette majoring in architecture, and his oldest son is playing baseball at Baton Rouge Community College and majoring in process technology. His second son is in his first year at Southeastern Louisiana University. The youngest two are still in high school.
Married to Jake for 15 years, Amber Narro certainly knows her way around a golf course – at least as a caddy. Having caddied for Jake in several tournaments, including one Tour event, Amber has shared in the nerves that can make for a great round of golf … or one that could definitely be better.
With a Ph.D. in mass communication from the University of Southern Mississippi and a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Southeastern Louisiana University, Amber brings almost 20 years of professional experience to the publication. backspin is the perfect “marriage” of Amber and Jake’s career interests.
Armed with a BA in marketing from Southeastern and nearly two decades of relevant experience in and around the food service industry, Jason is happy to cook every meal. Raised along the River Road in Reserve, food and Southern hospitality are second nature to this true Cajun. From waiting tables for Ruth Fertel and then the Brennans in the French Quarter to serving as executive chef at Riverlands Golf and Country Club in LaPlace, Jason has vast experience in the food and beverage industry. He also knows how deep the ponds are at most local courses, having buried his clubs in them several times. Jason is an account executive at backspin and also writes the “foodspin” column.
Phil Schmitt has been a member of the PGA of America for 10 years. As previous owner of backspin, Phil brings firsthand knowledge of what interests golf readers and how relevant content can help grow the game of golf. Phil is a two-time winner of the PGA Gulf States Section Championship, has been the PGA Gulf States Player of the Year seven times and has had appearances in several PGA Tour events, including the 2007 PGA Championship.
A Baton Rouge native, Phil remains in the Capital City and bleeds purple and gold. He has been married to his wife Allie for 16 years and has two children, Carter and Amelie.
